Where to begin? Tariffs – they were coming, they were worse than expected – and they hurt. Everything was down: Sweden dropped -4%, The Stoxx 600 fell -2% and the FTSE 100, a relative outperformer, ended down just the -1.5%. The U.S fared worse, and with the recession/stagflation fears that Tariffs bring, it is clear that the U.S equity market does not like tariffs…and Trump doesn’t really mind. The macro picture deteriorated quite quickly; with U.S. 10yr yields approaching 4%, Atlanta GDP now…

My father paid a quick (but not too quick..) visit last week, which meant that I spent most of the weekend eating like it was a competitive sport and although I certainly could not be considered a foodie, I’m rarely one to miss out on a good feed so you can imagine my delight earlier in discovering that there’s a spot in Shoreditch selling lasandwhiches. Sounds like something that may require a 2-3 hour nap afterwards but definitely one that’s on the lunch radar for now! Given the amount of tim…

Lá Fhéile Pádraig to all Snapshot readers! An important day to celebrate St. Parick, Ireland’s patron saint, who is best known for driving snakes out of the Emerald Isle… Irish folklore at its finest really considering that we never had any snakes to begin with, and Patrick himself wasn’t even Irish! Jokes aside, March 17th has delivered plenty of good memories over the years, so there are certainly no complaints here and European markets got in the spirit today with all major indices finishing…

Well, that felt like quite a strange day.. sunny one minute, umbrellas out the next, and it didn’t really feel like much happened. Volumes were much lower than what we’ve seen in recent times but with all that being said, the pad was stacked from the get-go so no complaints here and with tomorrow marking the end of the week – things are looking up! Sentiment was tainted slightly by political uncertainty, as Senate Democrats ruled out supporting a Republican stop-gap funding bill that was aimed…

In hindsight, a recent patch of good luck leading up to the week of Cheltenham was probably ill-timed given that it may have led to some overly optimistic decision-making, and in the least surprising news of the day, a few so-called “sure bets” have turned out to be anything but. On the flip side though, attending our Trading the Macro calls is always a guaranteed win and volatile times like these have called for our next instalment to be hosted this Monday, March 17th. European viewers can sig…

Given that us Irish aren’t exactly known for our ability to tolerate the sun, I can’t quite tell if the dizziness I felt earlier was from the five minutes spent basking in the 15-degree heat here in London or my brain finally short-circuiting after what’s been a wild week in equity markets…. Today was no different, with a blast of earnings to get through (are we done yet!?) and equities slipping from early highs as euphoria over Trump dialling back tariffs on autos was outweighed by a rather si…

The absence of rain forecasted in London for the next week or so has definitely put me in good spirits and with Saturday marking the first of March, it does feel like we are on the up from here which is hard not to get excited about given that it has felt like winter has dragged on a bit too long for my liking! On the other hand, it was hard for EU bulls to be too upbeat ahead of today’s session, with appetite for risk relatively subdued from the get-go after results overnight from Nvidia came…

“Get married or your labour contract will be terminated” is a pretty no-nonsense approach from a Chinese corporate in an effort to abide with government pushes to tackle declining birth rates and something which did catch me off guard earlier. Certainly not your typical HR policy and I’m not entirely sure how well that would fly here in the UK! Moving on to a different type of pressure, all eyes will be results from Nvidia (currently +4% with options pricing in a 10% move) later tonight which f…

A Tuesday night kick-about has become a bit of a ritual for some of us here and something I very much look forward to once a week, so you’ll forgive me for breezing through today’s session to make the most of the extra sliver of daylight which we’ve been blessed with as of late. A tricky start earlier saw equities on the backfoot, with haven assets bid for following the latest tariff rhetoric out of Washington which included news that the Trump administration is looking to toughen semiconductor…

Losing your wallet is bad enough, but having a winning lottery ticket purchased with your stolen credit card? Sounds like the kind of absurd headline you’d expect from a cartoon plot, but this is an actual story out of France over the weekend and has to be right up there with some of the worst luck I’ve heard in a while! Elsewhere in Europe, it was Germany which had much of today’s spotlight following yesterday’s election, with the DAX and MDAX rising 62bps and 1.5% to outperform broader Europe…
